Graduate Student Handbook: Master’s Degree Option Selection

Graduate Student Handbook: Master’s Degree Option Selection

Each student's program, as specified by the GS-2 form, must satisfy one of the following two options.

  1. Thesis Option - The student must write a M. S. Thesis that is approved by the advisory committee and the Graduate School. The GS-2 form must include a minimum of 30 credit hours, including exactly six hours of ECE 891 - Master's Thesis Research. As required by the Graduate School, at least 12 of the credit hours, excluding the six ECE 891 credits, on the GS-2 form must be at the 800-level. For this option, the GS-2 may not include any credits for ECE 890. Students supported as research assistants are almost always required by their advisors to choose the thesis option. In addition, those students anticipating continued studies toward the Ph.D. should strongly consider the thesis option.

  2. All-Coursework Option - The GS-2 form must include a minimum of 33 credit hours, at least 18 of which must be at the 800-level. (No Thesis or Engineering Report is required with this option; therefore, neither ECE 891 nor ECE 890 can be included on the GS-2 form in this option.)
