Graduate Student Handbook: Twelve-hour Rule for Students on Assistantships Graduate Assistants, Fellows or Trainees enrolled in a doctoral program or in a master's program requiring a thesis must enroll in 12 semester hours of credit. To be eligible to pay fees at the (reduced) graduate assistant rate, students must be employed for the full semester or through the time of completion of all degree requirements in the semester.
